I agree that a seller should always contact buyer to receive approval to ship a costly item with signature required. If I elect to use sigcon, I state that in the first sentence of the description.
To be clear, using sigcon is MY choice. If the buyer doesn't approve, they shouldn't buy my item. I don't ask for their permission. You might have a different opinion of Signature Required if you were shipping "hundreds of packages" rather receiving them. I only use SC when I am required to do so for my own protection. However, on more expensive items that aren't over the threshold I will put in my listing description: "Signature confirmation upon request at no additional charge".
If they don't ask, they won't get it! I've had items in the past sent with DC where buyers have opened cases with eBay, even with it saying delivered, that they sided with the buyer. So what makes you say we're protected? It should be totally up to each seller to judge whether they should send items with Signature Required. Obviously, dollar value of the item is a factor, but sometimes items sent to apartment buildings or office building suites, could be delivered to wrong unit numbers accidentally.
Even new users with zero feedback is a factor. Or shipping items in large boxes is another factor. Why would I want a Large Priority Mail box sitting on someone's porch for 6 hours, unattended?
It may be a slight inconvenience for you, but to me, Signature Required is another added insurance policy, and eBay even suggests this when printing labels for certain dollar values! I actually have shipped hundreds of items CDs as an amazon seller and have always used Delivery Confirmation, but never Signature Confirmation. I use it in the hot summer months on my dime after checking the weather where some of my LP's will be heading.
Note: I always notify the buyer a head of time. Show only Search instead for. Did you mean:. Should I require signature confirmation for delivery? Go to solution. Thanks in advance! Message 1 of All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Accepted Solutions. Message 7 of Message 2 of Ask the buyer.

It is not uncommon for their buyers to say they did not receive their merchandise, and the seller has no choice but to refund their money.
Lately, ebay is all about the buyers and screw the sellers. So its a case of a few bad apples spoiling it for everyone else. I would be mad too if I were you, but I can understand it. If I were scamming people, it would be in my feedback, or I'd have a brand new identity with no feedback. Pitt: If the seller would put in their posting that they require a signature for delivery, then I could CHOOSE as a customer not to do business with them.
When they don't give this info up front, they deprive the buyer of making that informed choice. I've never had a buyer complain about requiring a signature and I've been selling on eBay for over 10 years.
I don't think it's an issue for most people. Post offices are open on weekends if you work on weekdays. Unless you inform the seller of your limitations, the seller cannot make accommodations. But the assumption should be that a person would NOT have to be there to sign.
That should be the "default" so to speak. If a seller wants to require signature, this should be stated up front. Having to be present and sign for a delivery should never bee seen as the obvious thing. It's terribly inconvenient to people who work. You must sell to a lot of people who don't work for a living. I don't want to have to go to a post office on a Saturday when I've paid to have something arrive at my doorstep.
Plus there's waiting in the long line and dealing with all those nasty federal employees. It's not like going to a post office is convenient by any means. Ugh, I have better ways to spend a Saturday. That way I am sure the parcel will NOT be left on my doorstep for someone to steal. Also there is a proof that it was delivered to the right person.
