For me, this is one of the biggest selling points for any fantasy book — the magic system. Does it make sense? Are there clear-cut rules and limitations? Most importantly, is it original? The Kate Daniels series passes all these metrics with flying colors. The reason so many fantasy specifically urban fantasy series seem to clone each other is that they tend to not only borrow characters and plots from each other, they often end up with similar magic systems.
Only Brandon Sanderson has more inventive, interesting, and original systems of magic. None of these pairings feel forced, campy or out of place. Each species has its own distinct place in this world, they all follow the same set of rules in terms of the overall magic system and it all flows together seamlessly.
But the Illona Andrews team was able to put multiple balls in the air and juggle them successfully with 10 books over 10 years with an additional 8 short stories and even a few POV novellas. Kate Daniels is a great main character. We have seen her steadily grow in confidence and ability over the length of series.
She meets each challenge that comes her way and it feels organic and genuine. This series, along with the other books that have popped up in the Kate Daniels universe are one of my top ten fantasy series and my second favorite urban fantasy series of all time.
That being said Magic Triumphs , the last book in this series, is the weakest of the bunch. The biggest issue is that the team spends the entirety of the series leading up to the BIG BAD, Roland, and they do a great job at teasing him out.
He is the man behind the curtain, a ruthless Wizard of Oz. He makes being evil seem so logical, inevitable, and awesome. Roland is nuanced, smart, powerful and has reasonable, obtainable, and logical motivations reasonable, obtainable, and logical on the evil overlord scale. If so, you are hilarious. Nice to know the background story about it! Not questions I would have asked, had I the temerity to question you, but fascinating insights into things I never considered.
Lorelei can go choke, the worthless little thing. As if she could ever have tempted Curran! Juggling all the worlds you have created seems like a lot of work. I know that I do. Be well. Be happy. I love the bantering in your novels. Seems like you have more freedom with urban fantasy.

And greedily, I want the next installment on all of them. With the last Patricia Briggs story, I forced myself to read only a chapter a day until 4 then I gave up and gobbled up the rest of the story in one night. Sadly I am reading equity literature and my brain cannot handle the level of inequity I have been oblivious to. I need hope. I need relief. I need the chance that things will turn out alright.

Kate has trained in a wide variety of magics. She has learn basic magic from both the Witches and the Mages, knows a little of Native American rituals, is highly skilled in Wards, has thorough knowledge of herbology and know the most basic Med-Magics. Kate's primary skill having learned how to use a blade since she could walk.
Kate has an in-depth knowledge of swords from a wide array of cultures and has handled a great many of them. Her preferred sword, however, is the sabre, especially her personal sabre Slayer and later Sarrat. Kate's skill in hand-to-hand combat is second only to her swordplay.
In spite of having regular human limits most of her shape-shifters friends who have several advantages over her are afraid of being hit by her and can even spar with Curran the strongest shape-shifter in the Pack on a fairly even ground.
While not being able to sprint as fast or as long as a shape-shifter, Kate's reflexes are alarming fast. Barabas a weremongoose who can keep track of a striking cobra has stated that when Kate swings her sword he can't see it. Though her straightforwardness makes her seem simple at times Kate is well versed in various mythologies such as most western, some Russian and is especially versed in Jewish mysticism.
Another by-product of her childhood is her analytical eye. At any given time Kate can keep an almost systematic awareness of her environment for cataloging every escape route, places for cover and other smaller details such as how many people are in the immediate vicinity, what their coloring is, what their build is, how far apart from one another. In Magic Bites , Kate has two cars: a standard one and Karmelion. A bile green, beat-up, rusted truck missing the left headlight assembly and runs on magic-infused water.
